Barclays Premiership Football - Aston Villa FC vs Watford FC

Hello sports fans,

On Saturday I travelled south to Villa Park, home of Aston Villa Football Club to photograph images of their home game against Watford for Action Plus Sports Images. The past months have been hard for Aston Villa and the pressure was on for Remi Garde for a win. Villa are currently bottom of the Premiership and have gone 12 games without a victory and in the meantime Watford is middle of the table.

I managed to arrive early and glad I did as it allowed me to pass the extra security measures put in place as well as explore more of the stadium to seek new views and images that would add a different perspective of the club in the current climate. It also allowed me to do this before the heavy rain arrived so good news all around.

I decided to position myself on the pitch and away from the electronic signage across from the nine yard box so I could get some good side shots of the goal area and half generally. It was directly infront of the Watford supporters area and would provide some great images if the Watford players and come my way. I found out later in the match that the was a mistake. In the second half the Watford supporters became more rowdy and more stewards were brought in which totally obliterated my views of the pitch and players. I was unable to move forward because the BBC needed to moved up and down the side line with their mobile camera and the additional complication of the side line referee. All in all, a poor location and not to be repeated. Live and learn and next time I will seek the same position but in the other half.

With the whistle blown, and continuously watching the action on the pitch, my first task was to download and caption all my images before uploading to the server. Shooting football for the wire services requires some multi-tasking skills as you are always trying to do a numbers of jobs simultaneously and also be very efficient in your workflow. We must constantly and simultaneously watch the action, capture images, download images, caption images, edit images and upload images to the news wire. It takes time to master the skill and it is high pressure work which I love since you are working full on from the whistle to an hour after the match ends.

The match provided a lot of excitement and Watford proved too much for Villa with 5 goals scored during the match. Watford came away with a 2-3 away win maintaining the hold in the middle of the table and firmly holding Villa at the bottom. No premier League team has ever avoided relegation having only accumulated 5 points or fewer after 13 matches. Villa also equalled the league record for having 5 points or fewer after 14 matches.

As always, it was a pleasure to see the players perform from a close viewpoint and the match provided a selection of images which can be seen on the Action Plus Sports Images website.
