Hello sports fans,

This week I returned to shooting football for Action Plus Sports Images as the Football League Cup kicked off for an evening match with Derby County FC at home to Grimsby Town FC. The visitors are in League Division two and up against a Championship side so it was interesting to see how they handled themselves.

I arrived nice and early to miss the city traffic and to capture some general views of the stadium before it is flooded with stewards and their high visibility coats. Sometimes a clean stadium image can be used as stock and so worth the early start. After signing in and collecting my photographers bib, I made my way around the stadium to see the new changes I had heard about. Specifically, a new tarmac path around the pitch and a barrier for supporters. This gave us a path that we could shoot from for almost 75% of the perimeter available to us. It is a narrow path so should be interesting when there are a number of us scrabbling past each other. After the general look, I went looking for the general views from the highest seating areas to get a good overview of the pitch and stands to pitch level and then outside for some exterior general views. These were then uploaded to the news server and then a evening meal to stoke up with some fuel courtesy of Derby County Football Club.

After stoking up, it was time to capture some pre-game action of the players warming up on the pitch and gather some player portrait images for stock and just in time for the managers to emerge ready for game time. I decided to locate myself at the Grimsby goal end expecting Derby County to put pressure on the visitors and after the the first quarter it was apparent that they underdogs were fighting back. Derby County needed to pile on the pressure in all areas to come away with a win. During the first half, I was constantly shooting the action as well as downloading, editing and captioning the images before sending them over the news wire. At half time, I decided to move and follow Derby to the other side of the pitch as it looked more likely that they would score during the second half. It was apparent that Derby County must have had a good half time talk as they came out with more dynamism and it was in the 60th minute that defender Richard Keogh scored the matches first and only goal.

At full time, I went through all my images to review any specific images that can be used for stock and sent them over the wire. As always, it was a pleasure to see the players perform from a close viewpoint and the match provided a selection of images which can be seen on the Action Plus Sports Images website.
