MotoX Photo Shoot 2016

Hello sports fans,

This week I was given the opportunity to photograph motor cross riders in action on a closed circuit and get up close to create some dynamic action portraits. The weather was very kind with brilliant sunshine for most of the day and the track was reasonably short and it provided a variety of locations to capture the light and action.

My first task was to introduce myself to the riders talk to them about the track and identify sections they enjoyed riding. I put on my high-visibility vest and starting walking around the track and watching the riders at the various berms (built up dirt on the outside of a turn that helps a rider turn much faster) to see how they take them. Once I have a good idea of where to go, I let all the riders know so they are aware of me on course.

For todays photoshoot and for simplicity, I decided only to use a couple of remote flash units mounted on a tripod which are fired by a controller on my camera. With high-speed sync and appropriate exposure control I was able to balance the bright body rim light from a back-lit sun to flashgun light exposing the riders front and eyes. The triangle of rider, flashes and myself created a dynamic portrait as they powered through the berms. As with all motor sport, it can be very dangerous and these riders take each berm at speed and as they come down the turn, they pass you within half a metre at full throttle. You must have full confidence in the riders ability to control the bike at speed and feel the dirt under the bike so they know how to control the bike.

During the day the riders changed direction a few times and went around the track in a reverse direction giving an opportunity to try a different set-up and location. There were a number of locations that fitted well with the type of imagery I was seeking from the day and we managed to get all we had hoped. The riders were always supportive and willing to try some thing and I must thank them for their time. Here are only a couple of images from the days photoshoot.
